Charolais
The interest for the Swedish Charolais is increasing - not only in Sweden - the export
of Charolais animals is today substantial. We are proud of the fact that more producers
put value on our consistent selection not only for high performance but also functional cows with calving ease.
Charolais is the largest beef breed in Sweden and has been since the 1980s. The number of
cows in the herdbook is today 7000. 75% of the population is polled - which gives Sweden one
of the largest recorded population of polled Charolais outside North America.
More than 60% of the suckler cows in Sweden have Charolais blood. The commercial beef herds
appreciate the combination of high growth rate, efficient feed conversion and extraordinary
carcass qualities.
The selection has for many years focused on calving ease and high growth rate. An important
tool is the beef recording, 75% of all recorded pure bred calves are weighed at birth, 200 days
and at one year of age. These recordings together with information from the slaughter houses
give the Swedish bulls highly reliable breeding values for birth weight and growth rates as well
as carcass qualities.
The AI bulls are used in thousands of Swedish dairy farms every year and calving ease is one of
the most important traits. The calving ease is recorded for all calvings to provide you with the
most accurate and reliable calving data allowing you to make the best choice of sire for your
dairy or beef herd.
In successful beef production the most important is a vital calf and an easy calving. Svensk Avel provides bulls that combine high performance and calving ease - to make your beef production more easy to manage and more profitable - for pure breeding as well as for crossbreeding.
Sweden has been performance testing beef bulls for more than 40 years. Today more than 50%
of the bulls at the station are Charolais, approximately 80/year. At the test station the growth of the young bulls is monitored, and when they are twelve months old a growth index is calculated.
This index shows the growth rate of the individual animal compared to other bulls of the same
breed during the same test round.
Every year Svensk Avel buys a number of bulls from the test station. They are selected on growth index, breeding values, conformation and descent is considered.
